B.R.A.G. Medallion Honoree and Winner of NIEA AwardNaomi sees her first corpse in a Colorado Springs grocery store, but it won’t be her last. With devastating speed, a plague sweeps first the city, then the state, then the world, leaving less than 1% of the population to go on. Naomi, a gentle and sheltered housewife, finds herself fighting for survival in a world populated by desperate people, where might-makes-right, and mercy and compassion are in short supply. Fellow survivors Jack, a youth minister from Woodland Park; Grace, a 17-year-old high school student from Limon; and Naomi’s daughter Piper, a student at the University of Northern Colorado, all find themselves searching for a safe path forward…because it’s not just the world that has changed. The plague that decimates the human race also pushes mankind into evolutionary change. Those who survive are different, profoundly so, in ways they are just beginning to comprehend. As Naomi struggles to protect and reunite what’s left of her family, she must also learn to understand and accept the changes in herself. In this strange new world, her survival, and the survival of those she loves, depends on it.

Review

"Miner has taken an overly saturated genre and reinvigorated it with a skilled balancing act of realism and the supernatural. The darkness and whole abandonment of morality are laid bare with not even the most likable characters spared...which is where the realism seeps in. All of the usual tropes are cast off as Miner builds a world that, superhuman abilities aside, is likely to be a more accurate representation of moral descent than any I have read before. There's no question that this series will appeal to lovers of Stephen King's The Stand, giving rise to a formidable new author who is deserving of the comparison in every regard." -Jamie Michelle for Readers' Favorite

"The Stand" meets "The Celestine Prophecy." I couldn't put itdown! Compelling, well written, interesting ideas, believable/sympatheticcharacters, nicely paced, with a few surprise twists. I loved that there wereso many strong, multifaceted female characters. I'm looking forward to readingpart two. So refreshing to discover a self published author with such a commandof their craft... Ms Miner makes it look easy! - B.R.A.G.Medallion review

This is the first of three books, and I can hardly wait to read 2 and 3! I highly recommend this book, and even with what might be considered "triggers", I'd say it is ranked high on my Best Books of 2018. - B.R.A.G. Medallion review

A well written book that has an interesting story line that provides variety
As a fellow author, I finally picked up a copy of Kathy Miners book because I knew she started writing at about the same time that I did and I know a relative of hers that talked about her books several times. I recently purchased 'What Survives of Us' and I was pleasantly surprised at how the story line keeps you moving through four alternating sets of survivors as she tells their story and builds a base for a series. Honestly, I find it hard to read other novelists work, but Ms. Miner kept me reading with an easy writing style. I'm not a novelist because I love reading books. I became a novelist because I am a story teller. So reading is not easy for me. A lot of female authors get stuck in a woman's head. She doesn't, and transitions well between what her characters are thinking and what is taking place for weaving a story and conversations. A well written and balanced work. One warning: This book is not for the feint of heart. I would give it an R rating for 18 or older. Watching the world die and the subsequent fall of society isn't pretty, but she explains it well. I thoroughly enjoyed this series. I plowed through it nonstop, and when I came to the end I found myself wanting more stories about the survivors and their communities. I loved the setting of the story in and around Colorado Springs, having spent many happy vacations there. The main characters have more depth than I have found in most EOTW fiction. Each one has his or her foibles and there's no flawless knight in shining armor. (There are some pretty 2-dimensional bad guys, but there's even a twist or two with a couple of them as well.) I liked the fact that people were allowed to grow and change in these books. Ms. Miner has done a great job with The Colorado Chapters, and I hope she continues to write this tale.
Others have commented on the high quality of the writing, and I agree. Still others have also posted opposing thoughts about Jack, the Christian pastor in the story. <<The following may be a bit of a spoiler???>> I'm a Christian but not a conservative one. Early in the story I did find myself getting really put out with Jack and his whiny, closed-minded reaction to the reality of the changed world. But I felt like Ms. Miner did a great job of developing and growing his character as the story progressed. One would probably have to read the whole series to observe this. Some readers would undoubtedly find Jack's development to be an abdication of his faith. I felt his faith actually became stronger and more productively expressed in actions as his character grew.
Great work, Ms. Miner, and as the title of this review says, "More please!"

I deducted a star because the author left the reader hanging on all fronts. The story is great with the author bringing the reader along slowly and not introducing new events in an overwhelming way but rather giving clues and teasers along the way so the reader kind of discovers things as the characters do. I loved this book but after getting to know so many characters and then suddenly the book ends without telling us how the majority of characters those characters solve their immediate problem was very disappointing. In my opinion, this was a terrible way to get the reader to get the next book. I have read many first books in series that the author delivers a satisfying ending while leaving just enough to entice the reader for more which was just the opposite with this book.

I truly enjoyed this pandemic apocalyptic first in the series and look forward to Book 2! It provided everything I expect in such a genre with a touch of supernatural. Reminded me a bit of Nora Roberts Year One series. I read others reviews and many had a problem with the rape scenes of young girls. Made me wonder constantly if men would truly sink to this level of heinous evil in real life if our world ever is destroyed in this way. Would we truly lose our humanity and decency. And all the strong, surviving female characters! I don't know if Ms. Miner did this on purpose, but I applaud her. Next on me list: Book 2!

I took a chance on this series and my instincts have been proven right. First of three books, it's tightly and skillfully written with layered and nuanced characters who are always more than they seem. The soft hearted housewife with the core of solid steel and her daughters, the preacher caught in his hide bound paradigms, anguished as they are assaulted by th he new reality, the young girl who survives such horror and the strong, kind boy who loves her -- and so many more dimensional characters. You won't just read about them, you will know them and walk their journey through the author's deftly textured world. This is a series to keep and reread. Quite an achievement in a world where good storytellers abound.

When I first saw this book I noted that it had a couple of poor reviews, so, I wasn't sure wether to try it or not.
    I'm so glad I did!
It's so, so beautifully written, I could imagine every scenario, the characters responses were realistic and made sense.
There were no over the top movie style apocalyptic scenes, everything was believable.
But, it was fast paced and had me hooked.
Most nights I've read till the early morning as I couldn't put it down!
Every character was brilliant, I hated some, I loved others.
I've got the second book... I can't wait to read it.

No need for both the young girls to be subject to gang rape, otherwise a good example of the post apocalyptic genre.
