Editorial Reviews
Review
"This brilliant debut novel is a compelling read, at once heartbreaking and laugh-out-loud funny. It gives a vital rallying nod to female courage, resilience, and inner strength." -Terri Giuliano Long, best-selling author of In Leah's Wake
"I couldn't put this novel down! The opening grabbed me right away. I have enough Jewish friends that I understood the Jewish family angles and the foods etc., but I loved having the glossary. Fun for a gentile to witness the dysfunctions of this crazy Jewish family...I think it has wide appeal. I totally enjoyed this." Judith Gray, retired fiction librarian.
"The Narcissist's Daughter nails a picture of a narcissistic mother and the impact on a daughter. I love the resolution, with the tennis game as a metaphor for Jody finding her strength." Stephanie M. Kriesberg, Psy.D.; licensed psychologist specializing in adult daughters of narcissistic parents
"Enjoyed this novel and its strong characters very much! It portrays Jews/Jewish culture accurately. It's a great story, and it helped me relax late at night when I was done with work!" Rabbi Susan Abramson, Temple Shalom Emeth; author of Rabbi Rocketpower book series.
"A very funny book that hints at painful and touching moments that all families endure, whether they admit it or not. I felt like I was visiting some very familiar people in my own family! Jody may well be one of my first cousins, and Bubbe is definitely my grandmother." Rhona Barlevy, former occupational therapist specializing in mental health clientele.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 21, 2019Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseEngrossing story. Characters have universal issues and traits, at times it was almost too close for comfort! The sexual tension throughout was sufficient to hold interest without the real thing until, well, I won't tell what happens! I especially liked the tennis match between Jody and her mom, could see the action as Mindy described it, stroke by stroke. More than a game going on there. Congratulations, Mindy! Have you begun your second novel?
- Reviewed in the United States on September 2, 2019Format: PaperbackNormally, I readily fall asleep riding in a car, as though I were a baby. That wasn’t the case with The Narcisssist’s Daughter, which I took to read on a recent vacation. In fact, I stayed awake and devoured the book both on the 1.5 hr drive and then on my flight. I found the book hilarious and familiar in its rather stereotypical Jewish characters. Jody’s relationship with her mother is painful, and it is gratifying to see her grow and challenge the suffocation of such long-held patterns.
We get to watch the budding romance between Jody and Sam and how they navigate other family relationships. Everyone should hope to have a good friend like Ruthie. And young Hallie’s relationship with her Bubbe was perhaps the truest and most charming.
Given all the awful news of late, I needed the happy ending and the hearty laughs Mindy’s novel provided. This was a perfect, fun vacation read, with characters who I could relate to.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 11, 2019Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis is a fun read that looks back to all the old family dynamics from Russian Jewish immigrants. Maternal satisfaction often demanded that you marry only Jews. Never mind you have a degree. When are you going to get married and give me grandchildren I can brag about to the other Jewish women in my mah jong group?
- Reviewed in the United States on April 22, 2019Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseA great read. I loved the relationship between Jody and her mother. I could picture the scenes between them so vividly particularly the tennis match scene. I was thinking as I read that this book would make a great movie. Cheers to Mindy Pollack-Fusi on her first novel.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 5, 2019Format: PaperbackI’m so glad I read “The Narcissist’s Daughter”. It gave me insight into a difficult family dynamic that I wouldn’t have understood otherwise – and a way of responding to it. The characters are drawn with colorful, telling details, and the story relates a true, sometimes painful transformation, as well as humorous, sometimes over the top scenes. The protagonist, Jody, learns to stand up to her family’s controlling expectations, with the help of her bubbe, a stalwart friend, and a kind and gallant new suitor. And, as she changes, family members who have been so tough and critical begin to change as well.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 4, 2019Format: KindleThe relationship between a mother and daughter can be complicated to say the least and Ms. Pollock Fusi definitely captured it to a tee. The tongue lashing from the judgmental mom are identifiable, I think, for many women. Its a good reminder to button your lip sometimes and listen to yourself especially if you can 'hear mother coming out through your words.
As a non-Jewish reader I felt like I was let in on family secrets and real life drama. The Yiddish terms (thanks for the glossary) were interesting to here and learn about.
Pollock Fusi relates a story of love, betrayal, religion, divorce, and honor. The exploration of these issues and the personal growth of the main character Jody, make the story work.
Great job. Brava.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 1, 2019Format: KindleThis is a story every type of reader will enjoy. It captures the reader on many levels. At its heart, it is a love story... A love story between two adults, the love between a mother and a child and a struggling love relationship between an adult daughter and her mother (the narcissist). Throughout the various love stories, the reader will find heartbreak, betrayal, self doubt and a journey of self discovery and self acceptance. Though the characters are Jewish, one doesn't need to be Jewish to understand the family dynamics. This book will take you through laughter and tears. Definitely one not to miss.
