Flames of Rebellion (The Knights of England Series, Book 6): A Medieval Romance Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 42 ratings

Civil War Once Again Threatens England in the Medieval Historical, THE FLAMES OF REBELLION, by Mary Ellen Johnson

1397 to 1403. England, Tintagel, London, Shrewsbury, Conway Castle, Tower of London, Cumbria, Westminster Abbey, Wales and Scotland

In the fourteenth century’s waning days, the tyrannical Richard II is knocked from his throne, and Henry IV is crowned, despite a shaky claim to the throne.

Knight Matthew Hart, now in his sixties, believes he can retire to a quiet life in the wilds of Cumbria while Lancelot and Janey’s love remains more the stuff of Romances than reality.

Yet, all too soon, England’s lords grow restless, betrayal is in the air, and Matthew and his family must again ride into battle on behalf of their endangered king.

The fates of all the characters who grace the Knights of England series, spanning a century—including some of the most vivid battles, events and historical characters in medieval history—are resolved.

Publisher’s Note: Readers with a passion for history will appreciate the author’s penchant for detail and accuracy. In keeping with the era, this story contains scenes of brutality which are true to the time and man’s timeless inhumanity. There are a limited number of sexual scenes and NO use of modern vulgarity.

From the Author: There is nothing new under the sun. If we seek to understand today’s events, history will always provide the answer. By 1398 the megalomaniacal Richard II had consolidated his power, executed or banished all his enemies and destroyed all those who might speak out in opposition to him. Two years later Richard was deposed, thrown into a dungeon in Pontefract Castle and starved to death.

Lessons: We can never predict the future; actions always have unintended consequences; we sow the seeds of our own destruction and payback’s a bitch!

About the Author

Mary Ellen Johnson’s writing career was sparked by her passion for Medieval England. Her first medieval historical, The Lion and the Leopard, was followed by The Landlord’s Black-Eyed Daughter, a historical novel based on the Alfred Noyes poem, “The Highwayman.” (Published under the pseudonym, Mary Ellen Dennis.) Landlord was chosen as one of the top 100 historical romances of 2013.

After taking a twenty year detour in a quixotic quest to change the world--rather like Arthurian knights’ quests to find the holy grail, which ended in similar failure--Mary Ellen has happily returned to historical fiction writing and her favorite time period, the tumultuous fourteenth century. Her five book series,
Knights of England, follows the fortunes of the characters (and their progeny) introduced in The Lion and the Leopard through the Black Death, the reign of that most gloriously medieval of monarchs, Edward III, the 1381 Peasants’ Revolt, and ends with the deposition and murder of Richard II in 1399.

There is nothing Mary Ellen loves more than bringing Medieval England alive for the reader. She particularly enjoys researching battles, campaigns, the daily lives of both lord and peasant, and trying to figure out our ancestors’ thought processes, particularly how they viewed their world. Oh, and did she mention the castles and cathedrals? Mary Ellen likes to say her favorite place in all the world is standing before the tomb of the Black Prince in Canterbury Cathedral. (Hyperbole, of course, since Mary Ellen is not that well-traveled and her favorite places are probably wherever her kids and grandkids reside.)

However--and the very recounting gives her chills--a distant cousin recently shared the results of her years-long genealogical research on the family tree. When flipping back and back through the centuries, Mary Ellen began finding names that were hauntingly familiar--John of Gaunt, Edward the Black Prince, Edward II, Edward III, even Richard the Lionheart! All the historical characters she’s spent a lifetime reading and writing about! How can that be? Genetic memory? Reincarnation? She has no idea but you can bet she’ll be exploring the possibilities in future novels!

In the meantime, Mary Ellen hopes you’ll enjoy reading
The Lion and the Leopard, A Knight There Was, Within a Forest Dark and Lords Among the Ruins as much as she’s enjoyed writing them.

On my first visit to Ireland, I visited Malahide Castle near Dublin. I was captivated by its stunning grounds, interior and history, which so often aligned with the fate of Ireland itself. And once I learned of its ghosts, I knew Malahide Castle, now the fictional Castle by the Sea, would provide the perfect setting for my second time travel, ETERNAL BELOVED.

I am currently in the middle of THE MOMENT I KISSED YOU, which is set in early twentieth century Colorado. Since I live forty minutes from Cripple Creek and Victor and come from a blue-collar background, I've long been interested in the labor wars that occurred there.

When not writing, I enjoy spending time with my kids and grandkids and Karma the Wonder Dog, my German Shephard whose most impressive talent is his ability to shed all year round. This summer I plan to tour an actual gold mine and visit other sites where the Colorado Labor Wars occurred. Wish me luck!

6books in 6days. I put down many times then picked it up again. Long series of history book. Hard to keep reading the story because story covered such long periods time and slow progress. But in the end glad I finished. It takes patience to stay on story. Books 6 was kind of fun reading. My favorite: Matthew, Lancelot. Fulco and Vivienne.
Margery and Janet character confusing and little boring. Anyway I give 5 star for author's hard work. Make you rethink of Knight's vow and definition of LOVE.

The final book in The Knights of England series, this historical narrative draws the reader into a period of history where wars and rumors of war abound. I found the plot well written and researched and it is brought to life by both fictional and non-fictional characters. Matthew Hart is once again the central character as he guides the Kings and Lords into actions that are for the benefit of England. His wife Margery takes a much smaller role in this book but her heart remains steadfast in her belief in her husband. Having been previously introduced to Lancelot, I felt sorrow for the knight who could not have the woman he loves but is chivalric to the core and chooses to stay chaste until he meets Viviane, whose exuberant personality and extravagant meal preparation leave Lancelot floundering. As the characters come together for the final showdown of the century, hearts and motives are exposed and battles are fought. Although historically factual, this book is nevertheless a romance wrapped in history that had me weeping in the closing chapters. I received this book for free from eBook Discovery. I voluntarily post this review. This is my honest review.

This review covers all 6 books

With 6 books in the series it became a little tedious at times going over what happened in previous books. Probably could have told the entire story line in 3 or 4 books.

Some editing fails…. Epic, often referring to a mother in law as a sister in law…. Took me back having to reread the previous chapter to re establish the relationship, this happened several times. Yes Lucy there a difference…

I’ll admit I found the ending very disappointing, but I’ll let others read it and make up their own opinions.

5 of the books were available on Kindle Unlimited, the 6th and final was a pay to read, not a lot but come on!

3.0 out of 5 stars Not much of a romance
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 13, 2021
I was looking forward to reading the final instalment of The Knights of England. I had enjoyed the previous books when they first came out and was grateful to the author for a quick synopsis of "the story so far" at the beginning of the book. This final episode of the lives of Margery Watson, Matthew Hart and their extended families did not really feel satisfactory. I don't think the author's device of interweaving fictional events with omniscient comments of the political background of the time by relying heavily on contemporary Chroniclers worked well. It broke the continuity of the fictional narrative.
I found it hard to have any sympathy for Viviane and found myself wishing Lancelot would stand up for himself more forcefully. As a romance, nothing much happened and if your interest primarily lay in the historical events of the period - Henry IV and Harry Hotspur, Anne O'Brien (The queen's choice) and Juliet Dymoke (A border knight) were much more enlightening and satisfying.
So I am afraid it was not a glorious finale to this good series. However I look forward to reading other books by this author when they become available
